Tric a Chlic

Beth yw Tric a Chlic?

What is Tric a Chlic?

Tric a Chlic is a synthetic phonics programme in Welsh for children. The programme is built from three elements namely,

  • hear and recognise the sounds
  •  combine (build) sounds to read
  • segement (cut) sounds to spell.

The synthetic phonics methods focuses on presenting the sounds of the letters rather than presenting the alphabet in a specific order. By recognising and learning the sounds, the learners immediately begin to establish phonics building blocks, and with the right tools, use them to read simple words quickly:

  • when reading a word, they recognise the letters and combine appropriate sounds,
  • when writing a word they recognise the sounds and write the corresponding letters.

Within the Tric a Chlic second language Welsh programme there are 3 steps. Cam 1, cam 2 and cam 3.

How is Tric a Chlic introduced to your child?

Tric a Chlic begins in the Summer Term of Reception and carries through to Year 4.

Here is a link to some Tric a Chlic resources you can use at home to support your child's learning. The website includes resources such as songs, games, sound clips, and podcast lessons with Eirian, the author of the Tric a Chlic programme.
